Do you have childhood memories of hot days and nights tempered by the chill of a cone of ice cream? Then you have a treat headed you w ay that will jog those memories and maybe create a few for your children. Strickland’s frozen custard. And those childhood memories are what is bringing it here. Now you have the opportunity to try a taste sensation you won’t believe but before having dessert you can also have lunch or dinner. That’s right, Stricklands in Lake Wylie has now added a food menu complete with items such as Gourmet Hot Dogs, Sausage pepper and onion sandwiches and Meatball Parmesan. And the prices for every Strickland Product are low and family friendly.
At Strickland’s, it’s all about families – your family. Frozen custard is an ultra-dense, premium ice cream and is extremely smooth with a creamy texture. It looks similar to other soft-serve ice creams but it isn’t pumped full of air. And Strickland’s custard is made daily from top-quality ingredients in small batches. What you are served today is fresh today. The recipe for this treat dates back to the early 1930s when the founder, Bill Strickland, developed his now-famous blend. The first Strickland’s was opened by Bill and his wife, Florence, in 1936. That stand still exists today in Akron on Triplett Boulevard and is run by the third generation of the family to make, dip, and serve custard.
One of the secrets to Strickland’s premium custard is the machine used for freezing. Bill Strickland located special equipment to freeze fast and churn slow. This minimizes the air accumulation common with other ice creams. And the result is the legendary density and smoothness. The original frozen custard machines are still in use today, but they are no longer manufactured. So, Strickland’s had new machines redesigned from the old and patented the design. This dedication to a superior product even carries over tohow the custard is dipped and served. Strickland’s has always used a cone-shaped dipper, now an antique design that produces their unique, signature, stretched-cone look.
Every Strickland’s location uses these machines and dippers. Strickland’s has a passion about ensuring that the cone handed to the customer today has the same excellent quality a customer first received 71 years ago. It’s a standard few can match. They have 77 flavors, and each day they make vanilla, chocolate, and three flavor treats from the 77.
